This study examines a prominent linguistic phenomenon in the literary heritage of a distinguished encyclopaedic scholar, who wrote on various subjects, namely Yahya ibn Sharaf al-Nawawi (D. 676 AH). The phenomenon in question is the prevalence of linguistic criticism throughout his works; as his linguistic evaluations accompanied his studies of the Arabic language, its diverse issues and its dialects. This is a phenomenon worthy of study, research and evaluation. The nature of this study has necessitated its division into three chapters, preceded by an introduction and followed by a conclusion. The introduction focuses on two main themes: a general overview of al-Nawawi’s life and his scholarly standing, and the intellectual interplay between Arabic studies and Islamic jurisprudence. The first chapter deals with al-Nawawi’s approach to linguistic criticism and is divided into three sections: Section One: the criteria of linguistic criticism according to al-Nawawi. The second section: Al-Nawawi’s evidence in linguistic criticism. The third section: the rules of linguistic evaluation according to Al-Nawawi. The second chapter dealt with lexical criticism and grammatical criticism, and was divided into five sections: The first section examines the influence of lexical context in linguistic criticism. The second section deals with semantics. The third section deals with colloquial, Arabized and neologism. The fourth section deals with intransitive and transitive verbs. The fifth section investigates the diptote. As for the third chapter, it dealt with morphological analysis and was divided into five sections. The first section deals with the singular and the plural. The second section deals with masculine and feminine. The third section deals with Nisba. The fourth section deals with the forms (faʿala and afʿala). The fifth section deals with metathesis and substitution. Then there is the conclusion, which summarizes the most important findings of the research, condensed into specific points.
