Abstract
Cognitive complexity, performance-based learning, and autonomous learning are considered important factors in EFL Iraqi university students' language learning . This study investigates the correlation among the three variables. Specifically, the study aims to: (1) Identify the level of cognitive complexity among Iraqi EFL university students.(2) Identify the level of performance-based learning among Iraqi EFL university students. (3) Identify the level of autonomous learning among Iraqi EFL university students. (4) Identify the correlation among cognitive complexity , performance-based learning, and autonomous learning. The study adopts a correlational study design. The sample consists of 316 3rd year students from the colleges of education at University of Wasit, College of Imam Al-Kadim, and University of Al-Kut during the academic year 2025-2026. Three instruments are used for data collection: Cognitive Complexity Questionnaire, Performance-Based Learning Questionnaire, and Autonomous Learning Questionnaire. The validity and reliability of the instruments are verified prior to their administration. It has been concluded that Iraqi EFL 3rd university students have a high level of cognitive complexity, performance-based learning, and autonomous learning. However, there is a statistically strong and positive correlation between the student's cognitive complexity, performance-based learning, and autonomous learning. According to the results and conclusions, a set of recommendations and suggestions for future studies is put forward.
