Abstract

The poetry and poets connected to Santarém (Shantarīn) one of the most strategically important frontier settlements in the western part of Islamic Andalusia are the subject of a thematic and artistic analysis in this thesis. Despite the citys significant historical and cultural significance no previous scholarly work has examined its poetic legacy as a stand-alone topic of study. By analyzing the poetic output of both local and visiting poets associated with Santarém the study aims to close this gap by placing their literary output within the geographical historical social and intellectual contexts of the city. and composed of three chapters and a prologue. The citys location on the left bank of the Tagus River its conquest during the early Islamic period under ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Mūsā ibn Nuṣayr its function as a frontier garrison and military base during the protracted conflict between the Islamic and Christian polities of the Iberian Peninsula and its economic prosperity derived from the fertility of the Tagus basin are all described in the prologue. Al-Idrīsī al-Ḥimyarī and Yāqūt al-Ḥamawī are among the classical geographical sources used to reconstruct the physical and civilizational profile of the city. The prologue goes on to describe three distinct stages in the city's poetic output: a martial and devotional phase that reflects the spirit of frontier defense a lyric and panegyric phase that flourished under the Afṭasiddynastys patronage and an elegiac lamentation phase that coincides with political decline and territorial loss. Santaréms scientific and intellectual stature is examined in the first chapter which shows that the citys frontier character encouraged rather than hindered scholarly and literary activity. Attracted by the religious significance of frontier guard duty and the support of its governors scholars of Quranic recitation hadith jurisprudence Arabic linguistics and literary criticism gathered in the city. Ibn Bassām al-Shantarīnī author of the encyclopaedic literary anthology al-DhakhīrafīMaḥāsin Ahl al-Jazīra Ibn Sāra al-Shantarīnī a renowned poet and linguist Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Malik ibn al-Sarrāj a distinguished grammarian and prosodistAbūʿUmarYūsuf ibn ʿAbd al-Barr a judge and man of letters and Masūūd ibn Sulaymān ibn Muflit a jurist-poet of the Ẓāhirī school known for his ascetic and didactic verse. The analytical center of the thesis is found in the second chapter which provides a thorough thematic and artistic analysis of the poetry written by the citys indigenous poets. Amatory poetry panegyric elegy descriptive poetry ascetic and wisdom verse literary correspondence and philosophical poetry are the main poetic genres analyzed. Transparency of diction lyrical delicacy the persistent personification of natural phenomena derived from the riverine environment and the incorporation of academic and religious formation into poetic expression are all characteristics of Santarene poetry according to the study. The chapter argues that Santaréms verse is both an artistic accomplishment and a type of historical testimony by analyzing how each genre reflects the social political and spiritual conditions of the city at various historical moments. In the third chapter the work of poets who visited Santarém but were not locals is examined using a cultural-critical approach departing from traditional literary analysis. This method looks into the rhetorical and argumentative techniques used in the verse the latent cultural patterns encoded in the texts and the formative impact of estrangement and displacement on poetic experience and its expression. The chapter shows how visiting poets viewed Santarém as a place where eastern Arabic literary traditions and the western Andalusian sensibility interacted culturally resulting in poetry that has a unique emotional and imaginative register due to the frontier setting the experience of exile and the anxiety of political uncertainty. The Dhakhīra of Ibn Bassām the Qalāʿid al-ʿIqyān of Ibn Khāqān the Nafḥ al-Ḥīb of al-Maqqarī and various geographical dictionaries and biographical compendia are the main classical sources of Andalusian literary history and biography that are used in this study. The thesis concludes that the citys verse deserves recognition as a unique school within the larger canon of Arabic poetry in al-Andalus due to its thematic diversity artistic refinement and historical self-consciousness and that Santarém maintained a rich and internally coherent poetic tradition whose contribution to the Andalusian literary heritage has been systematically overlooked.
