Religion is considered the essence of ancient civilizations and the mirror that reflects their intellectual, social, economic, and political systems. It is occupied a central position in the civilizations of the Ancient Near East, to the extent that it permeated the finest details of daily life and contributed to shaping social structures and institutions. The civilization of Elam, which extended from the prehistoric periods until its fall at the hands of the Assyrian king Ashurbanipal (669–626 BC), stands out as one of the civilizations in which religion played a pivotal role in directing collective behavior and consolidating the values that regulated the relationship among between humans, nature, the gods, and authority. From this perspective, the importance of studying Elamite religion becomes evident, particularly with regard to the female deities, who constituted a fundamental element in the religious imagination and directly influenced the formation of beliefs, rituals, and the distribution of roles within society. The choice of this topic stems from the fact that ancient religions were essentially based on polytheism, reflecting early human fears and their attempts to understand supernatural forces. Elamite religion shared this characteristic and was influenced by its proximity to ancient Mesopotamia, which contributed to the development of religious beliefs in which goddesses played an advanced role. Moreover, the connection of ancient humans to agriculture led them to perceive the female as a symbol of fertility and the renewal of life. This perception contributed to the earliest representations of deities in the form of the mother goddess, who gradually developed in to a central power with religious, political, economic, and social presence. This historical continuity of the status of goddesses, and the impact they left on the structure of Elamite religion, represents one of the primary motivations for selecting this topic, in addition to the necessity of shedding light on their role in both religious and worldly life, especially given the lack of clarity regarding their position in historical studies, Accordingly, this study raises the following question: Were female deities in Elamite religion merely secondary symbols associated with fertility and motherhood, or did they hold a central status reflecting the role of women in Elamite society itself? The temporal scope of this research extends from the emergence of Elam to its fall during the Neo-Assyrian period, while the geographical scope encompasses the regions of Elam as the environment in which religious beliefs, rituals, and texts related to goddesses developed. The study adopts a descriptive-analytical approach by describing female deities as presented in textual and archaeological sources, analyzing their functions and roles, and linking them to the broader cultural context, while also benefiting from comparative analysis with other civilizations of the Ancient Near East. The results indicate that geographical location constituted the primary foundation for the formation of religious beliefs, as these beliefs were closely tied to the natural environment, particularly in regions near highlands. Death also represented a major concern for ancient societies, including the Elamites, as a mysterious force that drove them to formulate their beliefs and rituals. Furthermore, settlement along riverbanks was associated with religious life due to its connection with fertility and the continuity of life. Comparative analysis reveals similarities in religious thought across the Ancient Near East, as many deities had counterparts in neighboring civilizations. Conflicts between peoples also contributed to the transmission and exchange of religious ideas. The reverence for magic and the worship of strange creatures reflect early human attempts to develop means of protection and defense. The Elamites employed various methods to approach their deities, including offering votive gifts, constructing temples, and composing invocation texts to ensure protection and blessings. The snake carried multiple symbolic meanings, which explains its prominent presence in their beliefs, while royal inscriptions related to construction and restoration highlight the importance of temples in establishing religious and political legitimacy. Regarding female deities, the study demonstrates that their presence was not marginal but rather constituted a fundamental component of the religious and intellectual framework. They were associated with cosmic and vital functions and reflected ancient perceptions of life through their connection to fertility, reproduction, and nature. The experience of women in pregnancy and breastfeeding, and its association with fertility, further enhanced their status, as evidenced by the abundance of figurines depicting nursing mothers in Elam. The functions of goddesses extended to include protection, justice, and punishment, reflecting their authoritative and religious status. Textual evidence indicates that they were invoked in contexts related to maintaining religious and social order and punishing those who violated laws and sacred norms. Laws were also attributed to their protection, highlighting their role in reinforcing moral and legal values in Elamite society. The evidence suggests that female deities dominated the religious pantheon during the third millennium BC; however, their influence began to decline in the mid-second millennium BC with the rise of male dominance. Nevertheless, their presence did not disappear entirely, indicating the continued importance of the feminine role. The diversity of their functions reflects the flexibility of religious thought and its ability to accommodate multiple dimensions of femininity. In light of this, it can be concluded that the status of the female deity in Elamite religion was not merely a biological reflection of fertility, but rather a symbolic and social force that contributed to shaping the structure of society. Furthermore, the actions were undertaken by kings in honor of the deities were primarily aimed at gaining public approval and ensuring the continuity of their rule, as reflected in their religiously charged royal titlesen
