| ar |
| dc.description.abstractenglish | Most notable among these measures was the introduction of new political systems to guarantee the persistence of the Umayyad family at the helm of power, foremost of which was the system of hereditary succession (Covenant of Allegiance), which transformed the Caliphate into a hereditary, dynastic kingship (Mulk ‘Uduwd). This was a radical shift never before witnessed in Islamic history; in fact, it had never been experienced in the entire political history of the Arabian Peninsula, which was previously built upon consultation (Shura) and tribal consensus. Accordingly, the caliphs utilized this alien system as an instrument to immortalize their influence and enforce its forced inheritance, bypassing the notion of illegitimacy in their rise to power, as well as circumventing those more entitled to it, namely the Family of the Prophet (Ahl al-Bayt, peace be upon them( The pursuit of worldly immortality by the caliphs of the Umayyad house was not merely a spontaneous inclination; rather, it emerged as a structural strategy linked to the exercise of various mechanisms, through which they intended to consolidate authority and ensure the eternity of rule among themselves. The step of Arabizing the Islamic administrative offices (Diwans) and reorganizing the administrative frameworks was not merely an organizational reform; rather, it was an instrument to entrench the centralization of authority and institutionalize the Umayyad identity across the state's apparatus. This structure aided in tightening control over the flow of tax revenues and the spoils of expansionist campaigns to feed the central treasury, thereby contributing to providing the financial abundance necessary for the regime. In some of its stages, the Umayyad era was an important tributary of openness to other cultures; some caliphs encouraged the translation of foreign sciences, particularly medical, chemical, and astronomical sciences, and undertook their rendering into the Arabic tongue. This circumstance contributed to the Muslims' acquaintance with the sciences of the Greeks, Persians, and Indians, and enhanced their knowledge in those fields, which was considered one of the primary pillars from which the major scientific renaissance emerged and flourished in some of its cognitive aspects during the Umayyad and Abbasid eras. The tangible material impact of Umayyad immortalization manifests most clearly in the architecture constructed by the caliphs in both the deserts (Badiyas) and urban centers. This is evident in the sprawling palaces, grand mosques, and new cities established for military purposes, such as tightening control over surrounding provinces, managing them, and consolidating the centralization of Umayyad rule. Consequently, these monuments were a psychological reflection of the desire for worldly eternity and an emulation of the imperial manifestations prevailing at the time. These cities, with their luxurious palaces, were often accompanied by gatherings of sociability, music, and the recitation of poetry. This created a sharp dialectic between their material civilizational achievement and their indulgence in extravagant lifestyles, which immortalized their image as caliphs immersed in the adornments and pleasures of the worldly life at the expense of the true values and sublime principles brought by the upright religion. Thus, their experience ultimately concluded as an attempt to combine the construction of an enduring, continuous material legacy with a transient power marred by practices of | en |
