Abstract
The significance of investigating verb forms and their semantic implications in Nazik Al-Malaika’s poetry collection, Shazaya wa Ramad (Splinters and Ashes), lies in its utility as a critical and linguistic gateway. This approach elucidates the philosophical and aesthetic vision underpinning the poet’s pioneering experience. This study transcends traditional morphological analysis, seeking instead to comprehend how the poet meticulously leveraged the derivational mechanics of the Arabic language to articulate her existential crises and fragmented psychological states.
By selecting specific verbal templates, Al-Malaika successfully bridged the poem's structural framework with profound themes of alienation, mortality, and transformation that dominate the collection. Consequently, verbs cease to be mere instruments for recording events; rather, they function as active agents portraying human anxiety and regulating the rhythm of the emotional experience.
Furthermore, this study underscores Al-Malaika’s stylistic proficiency in adapting classical, robust language to fulfill the requisites of free verse (al-sh'ir al-hur). This demonstrates that her innovation in Shazaya wa Ramad did not compromise linguistic integrity; instead, it represented a conscious recontextualization of morphological formulas to serve the poetic image and endow it with additional semantic depth. Thus, the verbs within this diwan serve as evidence of textual cohesion and synthesis. Tracing the connotations of these verbal weights reveals an integrated cosmos governed by "becoming and dissolution," rendering this subject an exceptional means to uncover the poet's skill in fusing language within the crucible of subjective experience, and transforming the word into a mirror reflecting modern man’s struggle with time and nothingness.
The dissertation comprises an introduction followed by three core chapters, organized as follows:
Preliminary Introduction: Morphological Semantics and Nazik Al-Malaika’s Shazaya wa Ramad
This section addresses the intersections of morphology and semantics. It further provides an overview of Nazik Al-Malaika's upbringing, her literary and critical career, her publications, and a focused introduction to her collection, Shazaya wa Ramad.
Chapter One: Structures and Semantics of Bare Verbs in the Collection
This chapter is divided into two sections:
Section I: Bare Triliteral Verbs and Their Semantics, examining the triliteral verb across its six traditional grammatical categories.
Section II: Bare Quadriliteral Verbs and Their Semantics within the collection
. Chapter Two: Triliteral Verbs Augmented by One Letter and Their Semantics
This chapter offers a rigorous structural and semantic analysis of three specific augmented morphological weights:
Form IV: Investigated in terms of its causative and transitivity functions within the poetic text
Form II: Analyzed to demonstrate intensiveness, frequency, and repetition in the literary context.
Form III: Explored to reflect notions of participation, reciprocity, and psychological dualism.
Chapter Three: Triliteral Verbs Augmented by Two and Three Letters, and Augmented Quadriliteral Verbs
This chapter examines verbs with broader augmentations, including triliteral verbs augmented by two or three letters. It also investigates augmented quadriliteral verbs, specifically:
Form II of Quadriliteral Verbs: (The quadriliteral template augmented by one letter, analyzing its contextual and reflective semantics).
Forms III and IV of Quadriliteral Verbs: (The quadriliteral templates augmented by two letters, evaluating their intensiveness and structural functions).
The analysis traces both the inherent morphological values and the contextual semantics of these verbs as they manifest throughout the poetic texts of the collection، Conclusion
The dissertation concludes with a summary of major findings, followed by a comprehensive bibliography of the primary sources and references utilized in conducting this research.
