| dc.description.abstractenglish | The historical epoch spanning from the accession of Louis VII in 1137 to the death of his son, Philip II Augustus, in 1223 constitutes a pivotal juncture in the history of the European West in general, and the French Kingdom in particular. To comprehend the depth of the transformations during this era, one must revisit the roots established by the Treaty of Verdun in 843, which partitioned Charlemagne’s legacy and led to the decline of Carolingian authority under the weight of chaos and Viking incursions. From this turbulence emerged the dukes and counts as the actual protectors of the land, paving the way for the rise of Hugh Capet in 987. The Capetian dynasty thus inherited a throne burdened with challenges; France was merely a collection of discordant feudal states, where the King possessed no effective authority beyond his limited Royal Domain (Paris and its environs), besieged by major regional powers such as Normandy, Aquitaine, and Flanders, whose rulers owed him only a theoretical feudal allegiance. This study derives its significance from highlighting how the French monarchy, through the reigns of Louis VII and Philip Augustus, managed to escape this geopolitical bottleneck. The reign of Louis VII (1137–1180), who ascended to the throne by chance with a religious and monastic upbringing, began in the face of a political storm. Despite his strategic marriage to Eleanor of Aquitaine, which theoretically doubled his kingdom’s size, the failure of the Second Crusade (1147–1149) and subsequent tensions led to the "catastrophic divorce" of 1152. This separation was a political earthquake that transferred the allegiance of the vast Duchy of Aquitaine to Henry II Plantagenet, the future King of England. This shift created the "Angevin Empire," which encircled the French monarchy from the west and north, resulting in a disparity where the King of England held more territory within France than the French King himself. Faced with this imbalance, Louis VII adopted a policy of "strategic resilience" and soft power. He invested in religious legitimacy and an alliance with the Papacy to offset his military weakness, employing a diplomacy of patience by supporting rebels against Henry II and solidifying alliances with the House of Champagne. Although sometimes characterized as weak, Louis VII succeeded in ensuring the kingdom's survival amidst turbulent waves, laying the foundations of "Royal Ideology" for his successor. The reign of Philip II Augustus (1180–1223) arrived to harvest the fruits of his father’s patience, effecting the greatest turnaround in the history of the monarchy. Distinguished by political cunning and military firmness, Philip exploited internal rifts within the Plantagenet family between Henry II and his sons, Richard and John. His efforts culminated in decisive military victories, most notably the Battle of Bouvines in 1214, which broke the back of hostile alliances and enabled the recovery of Normandy, Anjou, and Maine, quadrupling the size of the Royal Domain. Philip was not merely a military victor but the primary "Architect of the State." He transitioned the monarchy from the concept of "Feudal Suzerainty," based on personal loyalties, to "Absolute Sovereignty." He orchestrated a comprehensive administrative revolution by establishing central judicial and financial apparatuses, appointing royal bailiffs to administer provinces, founding the National Archives to record Crown rights, and fortifying Paris as a true capital. Thus, the history of this era is the story of the birth of the centralized state from the womb of feudal chaos. This study is driven by the hypothesis that the existential challenge posed by the rise of the Angevin Empire was not a destructive factor, but the primary catalyst that compelled French kings to adopt graduated strategies—evolving from maneuvering and church alliances under Louis VII to offensive centralization under Philip Augustus. This dynamic conflict dismantled the traditional feudal structure and replaced it with state sovereignty. To verify this hypothesis, the research addresses key questions regarding the geopolitical consequences of the divorce of 1152, the utilization of religious legitimacy as a political tool, the effectiveness of Louis VII’s "diplomacy of patience," and the strategic significance of the Battle of Bouvines. It further examines the administrative revolution led by Philip Augustus and how the recovery of Normandy and Anjou impacted the royal economy and the prestige of the Crown. Structurally, the dissertation is organized into an introduction and four interconnected chapters. The first chapter, "Internal Policy of France under Louis VII (1137–1180)," analyzes the early Capetian approach, the impact of the marriage to and divorce from Eleanor, and policies regarding the Jews and internal administration. The second chapter, "External Policy of France under Louis VII (1145–1178)," examines the Second Crusade, the escalation of the conflict with Henry II, and French intervention in the Thomas Becket affair and the rebellions of Henry’s sons. The third chapter, "Internal Policy of France under Philip II Augustus (1180–1223)," covers his consolidation of power, the Albigensian Crusade, and his structural reforms in administration, justice, and education, highlighting the rise of the University of Paris. The fourth chapter, "External Policy of France under Philip Augustus (1189–1217)," details the conflict with Richard the Lionheart during and after the Third Crusade, the war against King John, and the climactic victory at Bouvines, concluding with the attempted invasion of England. The research relies on a critical analysis of a wide range of primary sources—French, English, Latin, and Arabic—including the chronicles of Odo of Deuil and Rigord’s Gesta Philippi Augusti. It engages with modern historiography, comparing the works of historians such as Elizabeth M. Hallam, Achille Luchaire, and Jean Flori to present a balanced historical narrative. The study concludes that this era transformed the French King from a "first among equals" into a supreme authority, ending centuries of weakness and establishing a powerful France that would dominate the European scene in subsequent centuries. | en |
