Abu Hayyan al-Tawhidi, widely recognized as the philosopher of men of letters and the man of letters among philosophers, occupies a distinguished position in Arabic prose owing to his intellectual boldness and exceptional ability to portray reality through incisive and penetrating language. His Baghdadi Epistle (Al-Risalah al-Baghdadiyyah) constitutes one of the finest manifestations of this satirical spirit. Its purpose extends far beyond eliciting laughter or engaging in superficial invective; rather, it represents a profound act of critical discourse that transcends the temporal boundaries of its historical context. Within this work, the satirical image functions not merely as an aesthetic device but as a magnifying lens through which the deformities of social reality are exposed and the pretensions of Baghdad's self-proclaimed elites during the Abbasid era are laid bare. Consequently, the epistle emerges as both a literary and psychological document, demonstrating how language can be transformed into a powerful instrument of criticism that relentlessly pursues specific social types, depicting them in enduring caricatural forms that have secured a lasting place in the memory of Arabic literature. The significance of this study lies in its exploration of satire as an analytical instrument that exposes the contradictions between appearance and reality within Baghdadi society. Through this perspective, the study reveals the hypocrisy of the self-aggrandizing social classes and the illusions sustained by the pretentious figures of the period. Furthermore, the importance of the topic stems from its representation of the voice of the alienated and marginalized intellectual. Al-Tawhidi employs satire as a means of asserting his identity against a society that denied him justice and recognition, thereby endowing the text with profound social and psychological dimensions. This study also highlights al-Tawhidi's remarkable ability to transform traditional invective from a direct form of insult or condemnation into a sophisticated satirical image constructed through suggestion, eloquent simile, and linguistic condensation. Such artistic strategies substantially enhance the aesthetic and literary value of the text. Moreover, the study contributes to positioning the Baghdadi Epistle within its proper literary context as one of the masterpieces of Arabic satirical literature, establishing meaningful connections between the Arab literary heritage and broader global traditions of satirical criticism while underscoring al-Tawhidi's originality in shaping this distinctive literary genre. Methodologically, the study is organized into an introduction, three chapters, and a conclusion summarizing the principal findings. The introductory section provides the theoretical foundation for the concepts of image and satire, examining both their linguistic and terminological dimensions before formulating the concept of the satirical image and defining its artistic and historical characteristics. It also introduces Abu Hayyan al-Tawḥidi as one of the foremost pioneers of this literary mode in the Arabic tradition. The chapters are organized as follows: Chapter One investigates the foundational sources of the satirical image in the Baghdadi Epistle, examining the influence of religious references-including Qurʾānic verses and Prophetic traditions-as well as the impact of the Arabic literary heritage in both prose and poetry. Chapter Two analyzes the rhetorical mechanisms involved in constructing the satirical image, emphasizing the role of simile, metaphor, and metonymy in enriching its expressive force and aesthetic effectiveness. Chapter Three examines the structural and linguistic techniques employed in the text, including lexical selection, stylistic patterns, and the structural deployment of binary oppositions, demonstrating their contribution to deepening the intellectual and artistic dimensions of the satirical image. The study concludes with a comprehensive presentation of its principal findings, followed by a complete bibliography of the primary and secondary sources consulted.en
