Our thesis, “Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq's Journey to Kufa and its impact on the spread of Islamic culture,” aims to contribute to a relatively little-studied facet of history. Though the life and scholarly output of Imam al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) have received tremendous attention in historical sources, this event has not garnered sufficient scholarly attention. The origin of the name of Kufa, its geographical location, and the reasons for its establishment as a garrison city were discussed in the first chapter entitled: The City of Kufa and Its General Conditions during the Era of Imam al-Sadiq. We also described its main geographical characteristics and the most important localities that are attached to it, as well as its social makeup, and its political, economic, and religious importance. The second chapter was dedicated to “The Different Accounts of Imam al-Sadiq on his Journey to Kufa and the Circumstances surrounding it.” In this chapter we have separated those who said that the journey did happen from the evidence that told us this is the case, and those who said it didn't happen. We also explained about the date of the trip, the residence of the Imam and the length of his stay in Kufa, and the political conditions which surrounded the journey, and the nature of Imam al-Sadiq's (peace upon him) be relationship with the Abbasid Caliph. In the third chapter, The Impact of Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq's Journey to Kufa on the Dissemination of Knowledge, we introduced the Great Mosque of Kufa and showed how it was the centre of dissemination of knowledge and the Imam's school for the dissemination of the religious sciences. We found that the main areas of knowledge propagated by Imam al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) were the matters of Qur'anic studies, Prophetic traditions (Hadith) science, Theology, jurisprudence and humanities like Arabic, history and geography. Applied sciences he fostered, such as medicine, astronomy and other sciences, were also looked at. Chapter four, Prominent Students of Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq during His Journey to and Residence in Kufa, dealt with the Imam's wide circle of students, which comprised more than four thousand students. These students were divided into 2 groups: 1. Students who came from outside Kufa to study under the Imam, and 2. students who were residents of Kufa. The study has clearly laid out the path of the Imam Ja'far ibn Muhammad as-Sadiq's migration to the city of Kufa and the length of time he stayed there. All the historical records and sources show that he remained in the city and established a scholarly institution that attracted many students from Kufa. This is the honorable intellectual position which Kufa achieved, and which was reached by the Imam Kufa being an important intellectual centre for his activities. Furthermore, the Imam's travel to Kufa helped great deal in the development of the religious sciences in this city. It was during his time that Kufa became an important place for the gathering of knowledge and learning, making him an intellectual, cultural and scholarly center. The trip helped to build up Islamic intellectual and scientific culture and spread knowledge in various fields. The presence of the Imam in Kufa brought many students and scholars to be in the company of the Imam and thus stimulated the growth of scholarly pursuits and fostered a rich and unified atmosphere of learning. This in turn resulted in a remarkable scholarly school which had a deep impact on the development and progress of the Islamic sciences and still influences these to this day.en
