| dc.description.abstractenglish | The present study tackles translation and translators in the ancient near east from the beginning of historical times until the rise of the Macedonian domination. It examines translation and translators in the civilizations of the ancient Near East, demonstrating their role in facilitating communication among peoples and groups that differed linguistically, culturally, and politically. The study is based on the premise that translation and translators contribute to removing linguistic barriers and enhancing communication and interaction among the peoples of the ancient Near East, reflected in the diplomatic, commercial, and cultural relations that connected these peoples throughout their various eras. The study aims to trace the origins and development of translation, uncover the factors that contributed to its emergence, and demonstrate its importance in the lives of ancient societies. It also seeks to identify translators, their fields of work, and their diverse roles in several ancient Near Eastern civilizations, particularly Iraq, Egypt, the Hittites, and the Phoenicians. Furthermore, it aims to shed light on the languages prevalent in the region, the methods used to learn them, and the approaches employed in training and qualifying translators to perform their various tasks. The study adopts a historical-analytical approach, drawing upon cuneiform, Egyptian, Hittite, and Phoenician texts, as well as inscriptions, administrative, diplomatic, and commercial documents, and modern studies on translation, translators, and ancient languages. These sources allow for the tracing and analysis of references to translation and translators within their historical and cultural context. The study comprises an introduction and three chapters. The introduction addresses the concept of translation and translators, and the geographical context of the ancient Near East. Chapter one is dedicated to examining the historical and linguistic foundations of translation, exploring its origins, the factors contributing to its emergence and importance, the major languages of the ancient Near East, methods of learning foreign languages, translation techniques and methodologies, and the linguistic lists and dictionaries used in language teaching and facilitating the translation process. Chapter two addresses translation and translators in ancient Iraq and Egypt. It discusses the role of translators in ancient Iraq in diplomatic, commercial, and administrative spheres, and their roles in ancient Egypt in diplomatic, military, and commercial fields, outlining their positions, titles, and status within state institutions. Chapter three focuses on translation and translators among the Hittites and Phoenicians. It examines the manifestations of translation in the Hittite state and the role of bilingual texts in transmitting knowledge and literature among different peoples. It also explores Phoenician translators and their role in trade and foreign relations, drawing on epigraphic evidence and texts that indicate the existence of translators specializing in communication with foreign communities. The findings suggest that the multilingualism characteristic of the ancient Near East was a major factor in the emergence of translation and translators from early historical periods. The available evidence also indicates that translators played crucial roles in facilitating communication among different peoples and in supporting political, diplomatic, commercial, and cultural relations. It can also be argued that translation was not limited to conveying meanings among different languages, but also likely contributed to the transmission of knowledge, ideas, and texts among ancient civilizations, making it a crucial means of cultural interaction in the ancient Near East. The present study concludes that translation and translators were instrumental in mitigating the impact of linguistic differences among ancient peoples, and that they contributed, to varying degrees, to strengthening communication and cultural exchange between the centers of the ancient Near East. This supports the hypothesis that translation was one of the primary tools that helped build bridges of communication among ancient civilizations. | en |
