| dc.description.abstractenglish | Linguistic criticism is considered one of the most important tools for safeguarding the Arabic language, as it monitors usage patterns, exposes errors, and restores correct forms. Arabic, being the language of the Holy Quran, needed this scholarly instrument to remain pure from distortion and grammatical corruption. With the expansion of the Islamic world and the intermingling of Arabs with other peoples, linguistic deviance gradually crept into speech, and errors began to proliferate in both oral and written expression. This gave rise to the indispensable role of critics and linguists in correcting deviations, regulating grammatical rules, and documenting classical Arabic in lexicons and scholarly works. Linguistic criticism thus became an impregnable fortress, preserving the language of divine revelation from alteration and safeguarding its authentic identity. This role is epitomized in the scholarly endeavors of Sheikh Ahmad Al-Awamiri, who dedicated himself to linguistic criticism as a means of protecting Arabic from corruption and deviation. Drawing upon the authentic Arab heritage in both poetry and prose and guided by the views of classical and contemporary scholars alike, Al-Awamiri examined the morphological, syntactic, and semantic dimensions of the language. He elucidated the importance of regulating common usage and correcting errors frequently committed by writers and speakers. He further demonstrated an encyclopedic command of linguistic knowledge and championed the purity of Arabic against foreign influences, asserting that language is a living and expansive entity that cannot be confined to dictionaries alone, but rather renews itself through correct usage and disciplined innovation. Al-Awamiri left behind a distinguished scholarly legacy in linguistic criticism, one that combined the defense of Classical Arabic with the guidance of contemporary usage toward correctness, thereby establishing him as a prominent figure in the preservation of Arab linguistic identity. The present study, entitled "Ahmad Al-Awamiri as a Linguistic Critic", is organized into three chapters, determined by the nature of the scholarly material, and is preceded by a preface and an introduction, and followed by a conclusion and a bibliography. The preface provides a biographical overview of Professor Al-Awamiri, an account of his contributions to language academies, a clarification of his methodology in the criticism of lexical items and concludes with a discussion of his critical orientation. The first chapter, entitled "The Morphological Level", comprises three sections: the first addresses derivations, the second examines verbal nouns and infinitives, and the third discusses verb structures. The chapter is preceded by a preamble defining the morphological level and delineating its scope. The second chapter, entitled "The Syntactic Level", opens with a preamble introducing the syntactic level and its significance in preserving sentence structure and meaning. It is followed by four sections: the first addresses ellipsis and explicit mention in syntactic constructions; the second examines the transitivity and intransitivity of verbs; the third discusses the substitution of one particle or lexical item for another within syntactic structures; and the fourth addresses miscellaneous syntactic issues. The third chapter, entitled "The Semantic Level", is divided into three sections: the first investigates semantic shift through the cases discussed by Professor Al-Awamiri in this domain; the second examines the use of certain lexical items outside their proper semantic contexts; and the third addresses miscellaneous semantic issues. | en |
